Lord of the Rings RPG passes $2.5M, becoming Free League’s most-funded campaign [Press Release]

Free League Publishing’s latest Middle-earth tabletop RPG campaign has raised over $2.5 million on BackerKit, becoming the most funded of the publisher’s more than 40 crowdfunding campaigns. The campaign for The One Ring™ and The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying 5E will continue through October 15.

Featuring Gondor and Rohan expansions, a Middle-earth bestiary, and revised core rules for both games, the campaign continues to unlock new content. The latest additions include a detailed map of Bree by Francesco Mattioli, which will appear as a full spread in the updated core rules and is now available as a cloth map add-on, plus a digital collection of artwork from the campaign’s books.

Campaign rewards now include:

  • Glorfindel as a new patron in the Gondor and Rohan expansion
  • Three additional adventure locations: The Prison of Ras Morthil, The Camp of the Werewolves, and a sorcerers’ watchtower in Umbar known as The Tower of Triumph
  • Optional Setting Up Camp rules for preparing campsites during journeys into the Wild
  • Hobgoblins and Great Beasts added to the bestiary
  • Printed maps of Rohan, Gondor, and Minas Tirith, illustrated by Francesco Mattioli
  • Illustrated cardboard standees included in all physical bundle pledges at no additional cost
  • Gondor-themed dice for both games, included in their respective physical bundles at no additional cost, with newly added 5E sets featuring d20s engraved with the Rune of Gandalf and the Eye of Sauron

The new expansions take players to Minas Tirith and across the lands of Rohan, with additional rules for mounted combat and travel. The bestiaries bring foes such as Ringwraiths and Balrogs to the tabletop.

The revised core rules make The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E a fully standalone, 5.5-compatible game. Both games’ revised core rules also include Strider™ Mode for solo adventures, previously available only in PDF format. Existing supplements remain compatible with their respective games.

The BackerKit campaign runs until October 15, 2026 at 3:00 PM EDT. Shipping is currently estimated for October 2027.
