GaryCon is well known D&D and TTRPG gaming convention that was created by Luke Gygax as a way to honor and remember his father and co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, Gary Gygax. I was lucky enough to attend this convention for the first time as a member of the press (courtesy of the GaryCon team). This year, the convention was full of exciting games and events for attendees to participate in, but it was also where Luke Gygax and Wizards Of The Coast made major announcements regarding the world famous tabletop roleplaying game.
Here are the biggest news that was dropped.
Gygax To Create Greyhawk Material For D&D
On Thursday of the convention, Gygax and Head of D&D Franchise, Dan Ayoub, discussed a bit about their relationship when Ayoub first took the position back in August of 2025. One of the first things that Ayoub wanted to do was to reach out to Luke Gygax and try to mend the distant relationship between the company and the Gygax family.
It seems that they are starting to patch things up. Gygax announced that he will be working on an official Greyhawk book for Wizards of the Coast. “… so getting a chance to put my stamp or my input, to return to Greyhawk and keep the Gygax in Greyhawk… I said yes, let’s do this,” Gygax said excitedly. He went on to talk about how they were already working on a book for Greyhawk, Melf’s Guide To Greyhawk (Melf is the name of one of the first characters that Luke Gygax created, which spells in the game such as Melf’s Acid Arrow is named for). It is unclear what format this book will be created (whether it’ll be print and D&D Beyond exclusive or both), but this is undoubtedly exciting news for fans of the classic D&D setting.
I asked Gygax what was something about the original Greyhawk that he wants to bring into his new book, he shared that he loves 5th Edition D&D and that he wants Greyhawk to be very deadly, and it will have alternate rules/mechanics to support that.
Future Roadmaps Will Be Announced Annually At GenCon
Something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the D&D Community was the lack of announcements from Wizards Of The Coast regarding future D&D books and projects. In the past, Wizards Of The Coast would announce their projects at GenCon, through their livestream “D&D Direct”, or through a press invitation. However, since 2024, there wasn’t any news about the future of the game, which got a lot of fans speculating what may be the delay for these announcements.
Then a few weeks ago at GAMA, Wizards of the Coast finally gave an update on what D&D products will be released later this year. At GaryCon, Ayoub acknowledged the fact that their announcements were delayed due to internal changes within the company. He then shared that moving forward, they will announce their roadmaps and seasons at GenCon every year. This year at GenCon, they will reveal what the Season of Champions will entail, along with some other major announcements that they hinted at as well.
A Commitment To The Community
One of the common themes discussed at the panels hosted by Gygax and Wizards Of The Coast was a commitment to community. Ayoub mentions how he’s aware of the missteps taken in the past and wanting to gain the community’s trust back by doing a number of things, such as creating a rotating Community Council to get players input and feedback. Justice Arman, Game Design Director for Dungeons & Dragons, mentioned wanting to meet the fans where they are at. “We discussed many times ‘who is a fan of D&D?’ That’s someone who has played D&D for a long time, someone who has played Baldur’s Gate 3, my niece who has seen the movie (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) 70 times. They are all fans.” They went on to say that they are planning to create a multitude of ways to meet this wide base of fan experience, such as bringing back the local gaming stores organized play events, D&D Encounters and a return to creating modules, which is unclear what that will exactly entail, but it was implied that the box sets that they created in the past, such as the new Starter Set and Stranger Things: Welcome To The Hellfire Club.
Wrap Up
There were a lot of interesting things that was shared at GaryCon that is giving the fans a glimpse of the future that I didn’t capture here. However, you can watch the videos of these panels on my YouTube channel or the embedded videos in this article to for more information.
