I became a Dungeon Master and Game Master out of necessity over a year ago. I started a D&D campaign for my kid and other kids at our local gaming store to play in because they wanted to learn how to play. My close friend group from across the country also wanted to learn how to play. Because I was the only one that have played, I decided to try my hand out in being a dungeon master.
If you know me, I am always meddling and seeing what else I can do to improve… anything that I do! And being a game master is no different.
I have been running games for over a year now, and one of the things I try to think about is how I can use my virtual tabletop (VTT) to create more engagement, immersion, and memorable moments, especially when it comes to combat.
So if you’re someone that is thinking about running a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) online or you’ve looking for ways to make combat a bit more creative and engaging in your virtual tabletop, here are some ways you can do this for absolutely free!
Video Tutorial
If you want to see how I use these assets to create these memorable moments, check out the video below. I’ve also created a list of the assets and links if you want to quickly look at them as well, too.
FREE Assets You Can Use!
As promised, here are the free assets you can use! None of these platforms have given me any sort of monetary compensation, nor did they know I was creating this video about their platforms. Each platform does have a paid version if you are interested in supporting them, but you can do all of these things in my video for absolutely free.
Owlbear Rodeo
Owlbear Rodeo is a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) that is web-based. It is very easy to learn and use, and is also mobile friendly as well. They also have some great video tutorials on how to use Owlbear Rodeo. I also use the Flip! extension and the Clash! extension for my combat encounters as well.
Token Stamp 2
Token Stamp 2 from RollAdvantage is a great and simple token maker that you can use to create those classic ringed tokens in your VTT – all you need is the character image and you’re ready to go!
Topdown Tokens From Forgotten Adventures
Forgotten Adventures provides all sorts of great assets from Maps to scenery and tokens. One of my favorites of theirs are the topdown tokens that they create. They have all of the basic creatures you may be looking for, and they are such high quality at a free price!
JB2A Assets Library
Looking for animated area of effects (AoE)? Then check out JB2A Assets Library, where you can bring your spells to life! This library provides .webm files, which are compatible to use in Owlbear Rodeo.
